What Counts as Total Compensation?

Total compensation (TC) includes everything your employer pays for your work — not just your salary. Understanding TC helps you compare offers accurately, especially when one job pays more cash but fewer benefits.

Total Compensation FAQ
Always negotiate total comp. Base salary raises future raises (since raises are often % of base), affects 401k match, and determines severance. If base is fixed, negotiate sign-on bonus, extra PTO, or accelerated equity vesting instead.
Employer-sponsored family health insurance averages about $22,000/year in total premium cost, with employers typically covering $15,000–$18,000 of that. Single coverage averages $8,500/year total, employers covering $6,500–$7,500. This is real money that doesn't show in your paycheck.
Enter each offer in the calculator. $85k + 20% target bonus = $102k in cash compensation — slightly higher. But target bonuses are not guaranteed. If the bonus hits 80% of target on average, effective TC is $85k + $13,600 = $98,600 — lower than the $100k flat offer. Factor in risk when comparing.
